Tennessee Senators Blackburn and Hagerty React to 40-Year High Inflation in the U.S.

Tennessee Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Bill Hagerty (R-TN) both released statements this week after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that inflation in the U.S. had soared to its highest level since 1982 in December of 2021.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased 0.5% in December, bringing the key inflation indicator’s year-over-year increase to 7%, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported. Food prices grew 6.3% on a year-over-year basis and energy prices soared 29.3% over the last year.

Senator Hagerty, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, released an official statement on the matter Wednesday, stating, “It may be a new year, but the pain of inflation is still very much a reality as confirmed by today’s Consumer Price Index. Every month Americans are hoping for relief from these soaring prices, but it’s more of the same from President Biden and congressional Democrats—spend, spend, spend.”

“Inflation is at a 40-year high, yet the Senate Banking Committee, which has jurisdiction over monetary policy, has yet to hold a hearing on this historic situation that is robbing the American people of their hard-earned money,” Hagerty continued. “Americans under the age of 40 have never experienced this level of price misery. It’s reckless that Democrats would rather bury their heads in the sand than actually confront issues like inflation, which has also wiped out any wage gains seen last year. Tennesseans deserve better.”

Senator Blackburn also released a statement regarding the 40-year high, writing on Twitter, “Americans are seeing record-high inflation, and the Biden White House is focused on banning voter ID.”
